Side dish or Meal
« Reply #-1 on: February 18, 2014, 11:22:37 AM »

After reading smoking Dons post on leftovers I
Remembered a dish some friends made when we camped together.
Potatoes, boiled then fried with chopped apples, onions and cabbage.  If it was to be the whole meal she added ground pork sausage to the mix. Sometimes cut up bratwurst or bacon.  She called it heaven and earth. I believe it's German  .  Maybe Wing Commander has a full recipe. It was Very good.

That's what it sounds like to me. Traditionally made with cabbage, potatoes, and leftover vegetables from a roast dinner. Meat can be added or not. Google it for recipes and/or variations.

Bubbles and squeak are usually made with mashed potatoes. You have the ingredients so just throw it together, brown up some sausage remove and set aside, throw in some cabbage, sliced baked potatoes, a couple of sliced apples, a sliced onion and cook, add the sausage back and heat through. Don

She called it heaven and earth. I believe it's German.  Maybe Wing Commander has a full recipe.

Heaven and Earth is a classic dish in the Rhineland. Traditionally it's made of mashed potatoes (potatoes = earth) and apple sauce (apple = heaven). Usually you have fried slices of blood sausage and onion rings with it, sometimes diced bacon, too. The blood sausage can be substituted by bratwurst or liver sausage.

I've found a recipe in English that is pretty authentic (at least the way I cook it ;)): http://recipeland.com/recipe/v/Heaven-Earth-10358

Thanks for the replies.  Several versions all sound good. Thanks WC for the German version.  No blood sausage around here but will
try pork sausage or bratwurst.
