Reusing old charcoal
« Reply #-1 on: July 11, 2015, 06:22:33 PM »
I closed down my vents on my last Weber cook. Had a lot of life left in the coals that I wanted to save for a future cook. So tonight I lit a small chimney of coals and spread them over the old coals?

Is this correct?

Pappy on my PK I can use coals 3 times. I shake off the ash and small coals and then depending on what kind of cook I'm doing add a whole chimney or the inverted side (about a 1/3). Oh I have the smallish Weber chimney. The reused coals will never get as hot or last as long as new....but they work!

Semi burnt coals are past their heat curve which simply means they will not burn to their peak temp when re-used. They can be used to light new coals or used when the high heat is not needed. Brats and hot dogs come to mind.
