My Possum War Rages On
« Reply #-1 on: March 23, 2020, 08:21:52 PM »

Just when I think I have the possum situation under control along comes another one or more. Last week I left something on the shelf of the grill overnight and the next day I noticed it was knock onto the ground. Got to thinking and thought about a critter having done it. Last night I set my trap and this morning there was a possum in it. Not a big one compared to others I've caught but still a possum.
I moved the trap and noticed this one wasn't as rambunctious as others. Later when I had time to deal with it I noticed it laying on it's side. I know it couldn't have gotten injured in the process of being captured. I turned the trap over and discover this one had tiny babies in it's pouch or whatever you call it. So instead  of catching one possum I caught at least three. I could only see two hanging out of the pouch but there could have been more in there I guess.

I considered dispatching this one before seeing the little ones but decided to relocate it.

So, this is like number 46(47 and 48 too you could say)since the possum war began.

That ain't gonna happen! Not for me in suburbs.
We have two beagles and one is over 13 years old. Whenever they go outside at night and get a hint of a smell of possums and they go charging after them. The older has hurt her leg and back a couple of times chasing after even just their scent. So, I trap them them and this has since helped.

I don't have a problem feeding squirrels and birds. I would have 16 - 20 doves in the yard at a time. Unfortunately leaving feed out like that also attracts rats. With the squirrels I started seeing a few hawks watching my yard. They would perch in the neighbor's tree or on the high power line out front.

When I was young my dad bought me a spotlight.  My dog Sport and I would go out in the fields at night and along the road and catch possums. I put them in a 55 gallon drum and fed them table scraps etc for a week or so. Then a lady would come over and give me $5 for every one I had.
She had a billy club to whack them over the head with and would have news paper in the back floorboard of her car to put them on.  She was always really happy to get them.
You need to find you one of those ladies to buy yours!

I get it if rabbits are eating up your garden but they're great eating.  Make great gumbo especially if you smoke them. Fried is another good way to enjoy them.  Heck, even just grilled.

So, this would be a great opportunity for you to explore your new hobby.

You could start with a .22 and then end up with some dinner ! ! !

I will be getting a 22 for my cabin. A certain red squirrel has worn out his welcome when he managed to get in my rafters tonight. Might look at that Glock 44

When I was much younger, and with a young family going through one of the numerous economic downturns in my lifetime.... rabbits. Rabbits were about the only food we were able to put on the table and make it through until the economy turned around. Cottontails and jackrabbits. The jackrabbits in our area were huge and plump, not like the bony carcasses of desert jacks. One hind leg was more than I could eat in one meal. They were delicious cooked like a Yankee pot roast. The back strap melted in your mouth. Yum.

For you guys with rabbit and squirrel issues you should consider a good pellet rifle before the .22. Especially for closer range shooting. They're quiet and effective and there's less chance of injuring someone unintentionally but as with any firearm always be sure and safe of the background of whatever you're shooting at. Even if out in the country a good pellet rifle is a great addition as you can enjoy shooting all day much cheaper and they're pretty fun to shoot. Heck, Pappymn, it doesn't take much to kill a rabbit at all. I'd get a .22 cal. pellet rifle and try that first.
